System requirements: BMD NTCS

The system requirements for BMD 5.5 correspond to the minimum requirements for BMD NTCS.

1. Server requirements

In this section, you will find information on the server requirements which must be met in order for you to be able to work with BMD on the server without any problems. In addition to the minimum requirements, the recommended specifications for servers are listed as well.

1.1. Minimum requirements for BMD NTCS

Here, you can find the minimum server requirements for BMD NTCS for up to 8, 16 and 25 users (requirements for more than 25 users on request).

up to 8 users

up to 16 users

up to 25 users

>= Intel Core i5 v6
8 GB RAM
SATA or SAS drives with array controller

>= Intel Xeon E5 v3
12 GB RAM
SAS drives with array controller

>= Intel Xeon E5 v3
24 GB RAM
SAS drives with array controller

Required storage space

The storage requirements depend on the BMD product and on the amount of user data.

However, at least 40 GB of free space are required.

For day-to-day operation, you will need the same amount of storage space (depending on the size of the database) to allow for setting up a maintenance plan and backing up the database. The required storage space is approximately the same as the current size of the database.

2. Requirements for client workstations

2.1 Minimum requirements and recommended specifications for BMD NTCS

The following table shows the minimum requirements for workstations that are integrated into the network and use the BMD software on the server. It also shows the recommended specifications.

Minimum requirements

Recommended specifications

>= Intel Core i3 v6

2 GB free RAM for the BMD NTCS software (total memory depending on the operating system, >= 4 GB)

>= Intel Core i5 v6

>= 2.4 GHz base frequency

4 GB free RAM for the BMD NTCS software (total memory depending on the operating system, >= 8 GB)

SSD

The available resources must meet the Windows requirements at the least.

Required storage space

The storage requirements depend on the BMD product and on the amount of user data.

At least 10 GB of free storage space must be available for installing the client.

Important note

The BMD archive printer runs exclusively on Intel and AMD CPUs.
Installing it is not supported on present ARM Snapdragon CPUs.

BMD NTCS Power Users should have a 1 Gbit network connection to the server (especially when processing COAC or balance sheet evaluations). Furthermore, we highly recommend using a CPU with a frequency of >= 3 GHz. A high frequency (not a great number of cores) is beneficial to the speed of BMD NTCS. The power-saving mode of the operating system must be configured to high performance.

3. Operating system requirements

3.1. Supported operating systems

BMD NTCS clean installation:

Server:

  • Windows Server 2025 incl. all security updates
  • Windows Server 2022 incl. all security updates
  • Windows Server 2019 incl. all security updates
  • Windows Server 2016 incl. all security updates

Client:

  • Windows 11 incl. all security updates
  • Windows 10 (64-bit) incl. all security updates

BMD recommends using Windows 11 Pro/Enterprise.

Both on the client and on the server, .NET Framework in a version >= 4.8 is necessary.

All operating system versions for which Microsoft ended support and 32-bit Windows versions are no longer supported. For details on the exact support dates, please refer to the “Microsoft Product and Services Lifecycle”:

Search Product and Services Lifecycle Information - Microsoft Lifecycle | Microsoft Learn

4. Information on updates, patches, new features

The operating system must be in perfect condition. To achieve this, the latest service packs and patches from the operating system vendors must be installed. Errors due to missing or faulty patches or service packs must be resolved with the operating system vendor.

The customer is responsible for maintaining the operating system and the system components. If errors of the BMD software are found, these must be resolved with BMD. Please understand that it is not possible for new operating systems to be fully tested when they are first available. Therefore, please consult with BMD before using a brand-new operating system.

5. Requirements for stand-alone workstations

5.1. Minimum requirements and recommended specifications

Both the database system and the program operate on the same workstation. Here, you can find the minimum system requirements and the recommended specifications.

Minimum requirements

Recommended specifications

>= Intel Core i3 v6

6 GB RAM

>= Intel Core i5 v6

>= 4 cores

>= 2.4 GHz base frequency

>= 8 GB RAM

The available resources must meet the Windows requirements at the least.

Important note

Microsoft SQL Server runs exclusively on Intel and AMD CPUs. The current ARM Snapdragon CPUs do not support installation of the server.

Microsoft SQL requires a disk sector size of 512 bytes or 4 KB.

Please refer to the Hardware and software requirements for SQL Server 2022

Important note

The BMD archive printer runs exclusively on Intel and AMD CPUs.
The current ARM Snapdragon CPUs do not support installation of the printer.

Important note

32-bit versions of Windows are not supported as a single-station version.

6. Network requirements

The cabling of the network and the network components must be in perfect condition. For any errors that are due to the cabling or the network, please contact the manufacturer or the IT manager.

BMD NTCS requires a stable connection between the database server and the client. This connection must be 100 Mbit or higher. A 1 Gbit connection between the clients and the server is recommended.

The BMD software cannot be operated over a WAN or VPN connection. In this case, a Remote Desktop connection or a Remote Desktop server is required. Furthermore, it is not recommended to operate BMD software via WLAN, since in case of network interruptions the software cannot reconnect.

7. Printer requirements

Generally, all printers that are compatible with Windows should also work with BMD NTCS, as the software uses the Windows print function (Windows spooler). Therefore, it can be said that if the printer works correctly on Windows, it will also work with BMD.

Only printers with an integrated print processor should be used. Printers requiring a so-called “host-based driver” (the workstation completely processes the printout) are not recommended. With terminal servers, such printers cannot be used at all.

8. General information

If the BMD software runs on a Remote Desktop server, the colour depth must be set to at least 16 bits. Otherwise, the graphic icons are scaled down to fewer colours by the Remote Desktop server resulting in suboptimal image quality.

Printers without a dedicated print processor cannot be used on a Remote Desktop server.

BMD offers a number of additional documents to assist with installation. These can be found on the BMD installation medium or on the BMD website. Please refer to these documents as well, as they provide additional recommendations and tips.

General remark on memory:

In order to work efficiently with the BMD software, it is imperative that enough free memory is available. Experience shows that in some cases workstations or servers would have enough memory but it is reserved or used by third-party applications. Therefore, system requirements are always dependent on the configuration, the expected load and the third-party applications installed on a workstation or on the server.

9. Database system/operating system versions supported by BMD NTCS

Please note!

If the system requirements are met, the BMD NTCS setup automatically installs the latest possible SQL Server version depending on the operating system that is in use or compatible. Details can be found in the section “Database system/operating system versions supported by BMD NTCS” below.
