Changing BMD NTCS ExchangeSync to modern authentication for Office 365

1. General information

As of 1 October 2022, Microsoft will disable basic authentication for accessing Exchange Online:
Deprecation of Basic authentication in Exchange Online | Microsoft Docs

2. Settings

If BMD NTCS Exchange Sync was set up with the option "1 - Basic authentication (user + password)", you have to make sure to change the parameter setting to option 2 (recommended) or option 3 before 1 October 2022.

2.1. Instructions

1. Check whether you are using basic authentication for the synchronisation (Tools → Overview of all Tools parameters → General settings → Communication system → Office 365 authentication).

2. You can also check whether basic authentication is in use in the Azure portal: https://portal.azure.com/#blade/Microsoft_AAD_IAM/ActiveDirectoryMenuBlade/SignIns

Add the filter "Client App". Then click on the filter and select all "legacy authentication clients". If there are still elements in this list, you will have to change the settings until 1 October 2022 at the latest.

3. Check whether modern authentication has already been enabled in the tenant!

https://admin.microsoft.com/#/homepage/:/Settings/L1/ModernAuthentication

If necessary, you can enable or disable the legacy protocols here as well.

PLEASE NOTE: deactivating the legacy protocols may affect devices with ActiveSync or Outlook and should therefore be tested in advance. In this document, we will focus on BMD NTCS ExchangeSync which already supports modern authentication.

4. Change the sync method to "Modern authentication"

Tools → Overview of all Tools parameters → Overall system → General settings → Communication system

Set "Office 365 authentication" to "2 - Basic authentication with admin consent". Option 2 requires only one approval as the global administrator of the Office 365 tenant. For the users, nothing will change. If you select option 3, however, each user has to give their consent and enter their Office 365 login details once. This option thus requires a lot more effort.

Click on "Yes" in the messages that open next until the query for the admin consent appears:

Authentication now requires a global administrator and the password of the Office 365 tenant:

Next, you have to accept the permissions:

5. After that, we recommend you check SYNCSERVICE.INI and make sure that the entry "Authentication=2" exists before restarting the BMDNTCSSyncService. Also check BMDMergeservice.log, enter a test appointment and check the functionality.
